Nursing Division: Professional Development
The development of knowledge, skills and behaviors is ongoing at MMSC. Clinical, professional and organizational learning occurs concurrently, but with varying emphasis throughout one's career. MMSC promotes higher learning by offering tuition reimbursement as part of our benefits package and on-site continuing education opportunities. We support the learning needs of nurses by providing opportunities for the acquisition of new knowledge, skills and behaviors in view of advancing technologies, changing health care delivery systems, expanding nursing roles, and nursing outreach.
Nursing Orientation
At Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center, we appreciate the unique knowledge and experiences of new employees. For that reason, orientation to every unit is individualized to maximize learning opportunities. A preceptor-based unit orientation is combined with learning experiences in a classroom setting to create a comprehensive orientation, which serves as the foundation for success in our organization. Nurses on orientation have the opportunity to learn from experienced RNs in a friendly, supportive environment where nurses are valued for their contribution to the high-quality patient care delivered at MMSC.

Mentoring Program
The Nurse Mentoring Program at MMSC assists nurses who have completed orientation with their personal and professional development. Once off orientation, our new nurses are paired with carefully selected mentors who support and encourage them through their first year at MMSC and beyond. Our Mentoring Program increases job satisfaction by assisting with the transition of new nursing staff and promoting a culture of excellence in nursing.
Special Recognition Program
Registered Nurses may apply for the Special Recognition Program after their first year's performance evaluation. The Special Recognition Program is a system in which professional nurses are rewarded for consistently demonstrating exceptional competency, performance and effort in their nursing practice.
