It's common in the medical community to use abbreviations to describe anything from a specialist's credentials to a type of procedure. While it may make things run smoothly for the medical professionals, it can be confusing to visitors and patients who may not be familiar with the terminology. Below is a list of a few common abbreviations found throughout MMSC.
- MD - Doctor of Medicine
- DO - Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
- RN - Registered Nurse
- BSN - Bachelor of Science, Nursing
- LPN - Licensed Practical Nurse
- ARNP - Advanced Nurse Practitioner
- CRNA - Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist
- EMT - Emergency Medical Technician
- SW - Social Worker
- MSW - Master of Social Work
- RD - Registered Dietitian
- OC - Occupational Therapy
- PT - Physical Therapy
- RT - Respiratory Therapy
- OR - Operating Room
- ICU - Intensive Care Unit
- CT Scan - Computed Tomography, a scan of the body that provides a sectional view
- MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging, imaging that uses magnetic field and radio waves to create cross-sectional images of the head and body
- PET - Positron-Emission Tomography, a scan of the body that provides a sectional view
