MMSC Foundation: Foundation Funded Programs

The MMSC Foundation has accepted the challenge to make our community a safer and healthier place to live. Programs have been developed by the Foundation to help the hospital identify and respond to the health care needs of the communities we serve.
Building Healthy Families
The MMSC Foundation supports a Bilingual Child Development Specialist with Building Healthy Families. Through home visits, this program provides culturally competent health care, child development and parent education, family support, and information and referral services to all parents of newborns who reside in Marshall County.
The Building Healthy Families visits are made from 24-72 hours after mother and baby are discharged and follow up on issues that affect newborn growth and development and overall health, as well as maternal issues.
Community School Nursing
The MMSC Foundation employs registered nurses to ensure children receive the health care services they need. As a recipient of the 2006 Iowa Community Health Prize, the Community School Nursing program is a unique blend of public and private efforts that increase access to health care for uninsured and underinsured children.
The Community School Nurses handle a variety of health-related services, including immunizations, vision screenings and more. Together, the nurses average more than 100 referrals each month from school nurses, parents and other agencies. The nurses also take special care to ensure children are transported safely to doctor and dentist appointments.
Thanks to the support of the MMSC Foundation, the Community School Nursing program is an integral part of ensuring that area children are healthy and ready to learn each day at school.
Breast Cancer Detection
PREVENT is an early breast cancer detection program that was established in partnership with the Marshall County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. Most medical experts agree that successful treatment of breast cancer is often linked to early diagnosis. Mammography screening plays a central part in early detection.
The MMSC Foundation has made a commitment that every woman, regardless of her ability to pay, will be able to have a mammography screening in accordance with American Cancer Society Guidelines.
